A former engineer shares that 8 years ago he built the first offline Siri: all server infrastructure ran on-device, working even in airplane mode. It fired parallel local and remote requests — even giving the server a 500ms head start — yet local Siri still won 25% of the time. The project surfaced via Reddit.
