12,500 job descriptions analyzed: AI PM vs FDE vs Product Builder
aakashgupta · x · 2026-10-10
Aakash Gupta breaks down three converging AI-era roles with Ankyth Shukla, who ran 12,500 PM job descriptions through Claude and GPT. Context: LinkedIn just replaced its APM program with an Associate Product Builder program, and Freshworks CPO Srini Raghavan thinks Product Builder replaces engineer, designer and PM within 5 years.
- AI PM: PM who builds AI features — ships specs, evals, prototypes; engineers write production code. Tools: Claude Code, Notion AI, Amplitude, Dovetail.
- Forward Deployed Engineer: builds deployments for a single customer, on-site with 25–50% travel; title started at Palantir; OpenAI pays $185K–$300K plus equity.
- Product Builder: any PM building with AI, writing and reviewing code themselves; ShipBob lists $151K–$252K. Tools: Claude Code, Lovable, Bolt, Figma AI, Vercel, Supabase.
The real separator is whose hands the AI is in — and most Product Builders still carry PM titles today. That's the opening.
