Math PhD student maps AI's three futures for pure math: the funding excuse is collapsing
DottorMaelstrom · reddit · 2026-10-10
A math physics PhD student lays out three scenarios for AI's impact on pure mathematics after unsettling conversations with colleagues.
- Scenario 1 (his most likely): AI plateaus once it exhausts human training material. He argues AI-generated math text is "exposed very very badly," so self-training degrades output, leading to a tidal-wave dynamic of human-written papers feeding future models.
- Scenario 2 (an unknowable math oracle): Pure math is "a completely masturbatory endeavor," and departments have long justified funding via the claim that useless theorems eventually find applications. He cites Navier-Stokes — hyped as engineering-critical until AI solved it, then suddenly dismissed as useless to downplay the result. If AI hands physicists the right mathematical structures directly, the funding excuse evaporates; the community's real task is honestly answering why it does math.
He flags AI's weak exposition as its current limitation, but calls claims that human "elegance" is unreplicable a cope.
