Decomposed fertility data shows mothers still average 2.1+ kids; the crisis is childlessness
Pascallisch · x · 2026-10-10
BirthGauge updated its breakdown of TFRs into Total Maternal Rate and children per mother. Among women who choose motherhood, fertility is effectively fine — mothers nearly everywhere average more than 2.1 kids. The declining TFR is driven by growing ranks of unmarried, childless women, and countries with similar TFRs differ greatly in how they get there.
