OpenAI's 722 AI-generated math papers drew claims of destroyed careers — and a jobs-program rebuttal

NYU math professor Tristan Buckmaster criticized OpenAI's Tuesday release of 722 AI-generated math papers, saying the dump "destroyed the careers of early career mathematicians" and wiped out entire research programs.
Reacting to the interview, Perry Metzger pushed back sharply: mathematics doesn't exist as a jobs program, and the more mathematicians protest conjectures being solved in ways they dislike, the less sympathy they'll get. The exchange captures a growing rift over AI-generated proofs — one side fearing damage to research careers, the other arguing methods shouldn't be judged by who is displaced.
