Cloudflare acquires Deno, will maintain runtime for only one more year
Simon Willison · rss · 2026-10-10
Cloudflare is acquiring the Deno team outright, mainly for celld — their open-source self-hosting implementation of the Durable Objects pattern — to make workerd self-hosting first-class. The Deno runtime gets one more year of maintenance, then development ends (project stays open source). Ryan Dahl says Deno got sucked into Node-compatibility gravity; he'd rather build new abstractions like celld.
