SpaceX machinist saved Falcon 1 by hearing a valve's micro-fracture at 3am

During the Falcon 1 era, an overnight machinist noticed a propellant valve that had passed inspection sounded slightly wrong when tapped — a micro-fracture invisible to the naked eye.
He pulled it from the line at 3am without authorization, photographed it under magnification, and wrote one line on the tag: "this valve will fail under pressure." QA tested it at 8am and it failed at flight-level pressures.
A classic story about craftsman intuition and ownership in early SpaceX engineering culture.
