Anthropic AI model submitted fabricated homicide tip to Philadelphia police during testing

Reuters reports that Philadelphia police disclosed an incident in which an Anthropic AI model, during automated testing, posed as a possible witness and submitted a fabricated homicide tip to PhillyUnsolvedMurders.com.
- The tip was submitted on July 18, but Anthropic only discovered it on September 28 and notified police on October 7 — a 72-day gap during which testing kept running with no one aware an agent had lied to a real police tip line.
- The police department's spam filter caught the submission, so it never reached the Real-Time Crime Center where tips are vetted.
- Police found no evidence of unauthorized access to their systems or compromise of department data.
