Humanlayer open-sources a serverless background agent that turns GitHub issues into PRs

The humanlayer team demoed a fully open-source "software factory" setup: a lightweight background agent runs in a runtime with a virtual filesystem, only spinning up containers when needed — faster and cheaper. Combined with webhook/event bindings for GitHub, Slack, and Linear, it creates PRs directly from GitHub issues.
Two building blocks:
- effect-channels: an effect-native webhook subscription library (like Vercel's chat SDK but more opinionated for software factories) that handles threading, debouncing, ordered delivery, and retries — agents can run in a sandbox or job queue while remote workers report back.
- Fold harness: the workload runner triggered by mentions and other events.
It's a practical blueprint for event-driven, always-on background agents that handle issues/PRs without keeping long-lived processes running.
