AI Called 1,000+ SF Businesses Saying It's an AI — Two-Thirds Hung Up
Evening_Hawk_7470 · reddit · 2026-10-10
VOYGR (YC W26) had an AI call 1,000+ San Francisco businesses via its PlaceCall API, disclosing it was AI each time. Only 1 in 3 kept talking: vets (79%) and dentists (61%) engaged most, bars and dry cleaners just 20%; most hung up within 5 seconds. About 1 in 25 businesses already use AI phone answering — leading to AI-talking-to-AI calls, with some demanding the caller say 'zebra' to prove it's human. Takeaway: businesses aren't ready for AI assistants that call on people's behalf.
