Nikon disqualifies microscopy video contest winner for AI-assisted post-processing

Nikon disqualified the original first-place video in its Small World in Motion microscopy contest for violating the competition's generative AI rules. The video by Dr. Ning Xu claimed to show cilia moving in the airway of a child with PCD.
After online skepticism prompted a review, Xu admitted on LinkedIn to using "an unsupervised neural-network method for AI-assisted post-processing" to distinguish and visualize the structures — another case of AI content blurring authenticity in scientific imaging.
