Musk says Grokbot will route to best models like Claude, betting models commoditize

The author parses Elon Musk's statement that Grokbot will use the best backend model for any given task — including Claude Opus 5.5, Midjourney, and other leading APIs — not just Grok.
He frames it as a sandwich strategy:
- Top layer: the harness/agent system, Grokbot built by the Cursor team — where users actually work
- Bottom layer: compute, SpaceX building on Earth and in orbit, with projections of the first orbital gigawatt by 2030
- Middle layer: the models themselves, interchangeable — whoever is best this month gets the work
The takeaway: if models are commoditizing, you don't need to win the model race — you need to own what sits above and below it.
