Dev shares how he built a game discovery tool with Claude Opus in days
PhasersOnKill · reddit · 2026-10-10
A developer built the free game discovery tool New Game+ over a few days, mostly with Claude Opus 5.5: enter games you love and it suggests similar titles with critic/player scores, time-to-beat, and the cheapest way to play, plus Steam library import.
Practical lessons from working with Claude:
- Plan first, keep a decisions log: Claude wrote an architecture doc up front and logged every deviation with reasons; each new session reads these first so it doesn't forget context.
- No AI in the recommendations: for sustainability, it's a similarity engine over public data (IGDB, Steam, OpenCritic, IsThereAnyDeal).
- Test the "feel", not just the code: tuned against a set of "if you liked X, you should see Y" cases.
- Have it review its own work: a separate Claude agent reviewed each release for security and stability, catching real bugs.
- Hard-won lesson: adding crawler-friendly pages let search engines blow through the database's free-plan limits; reducing crawlable URLs fixed it.
