AI math is teleportation to a foggy summit: Cepelewicz's striking mountain metaphor
burny_tech · x · 2026-10-10
A retweet of Jordana Cepelewicz's metaphor about AI mathematics:
"It's as if you were teleported to the peak of a tall mountain. Surrounded by fog, you have no idea where you are or what's around you. You do not know how your mountain connects to others, and you have no equipment to help you explore or help someone else join you. Had you climbed it yourself, you would have experienced how the body adapts to altitude, invented tools to navigate cliffs, met a fellow explorer, gotten lost in a hidden valley, found a plant that becomes life-saving medicine. Instead you perch on the peak in the dark, while the maker of the teleportation machine tells you it can explore the wilderness better than any human."
The metaphor captures a key critique: AI can reach correct mathematical results without the process, intuition, and transferable knowledge that come from genuine exploration — and it pushes back on claims that AI "explores math better than humans."
