StepFun's Step 5 Preview hit #1 on OpenRouter Trending just one day after launch and is already available in Kilo Code, Cline, Hermes Agent, and OpenCode — a drop-in swap for existing workflows.
Tester omarsar0, who has used it as a coding agent since early access, highlights:
- Self-checking agent behavior: verifies its own work and stops when done, well suited to long unattended agent runs
- Real engineering work: fixing bugs in unfamiliar codebases, multi-file feature implementation, and refactoring with changes that pass checks
- Frontend generation: turns screenshots, mockups, or PRDs into working web pages, and can build playable browser games from assets
- Office workflows: reads annual reports and operating data to produce financial reports, editable spreadsheets, and slide decks
Specs: 1M-token context with up to 1M output tokens; a sparse MoE with 600B total parameters and 27B active per token. Open weights arrive October 15.
