Stanford/KCL study of 1.25B job postings: AI adoption lifts employment 3.3%, junior roles fall 2.5%

A study by Stanford's Bharat Chandar and KCL's Bouke Klein Teeselink analyzed 1.25 billion job postings and 154M employment records across 41 countries, defining firms as AI adopters once their job ads require genAI skills.
Key findings:
- Total employment at adopting firms grew 3.3% after adoption
- Senior employment rose 6.7% while junior employment fell 2.5%, shrinking the junior share of the workforce
- The junior-share decline appeared in 23 of 31 countries with precise estimates, including the US, Brazil, and Saudi Arabia
- Authors attribute the shift mainly to firms hiring more senior people
Laurence Moroney's takeaway for educators: help early-career people build portfolios that look like senior work—shipped projects they can debug and explain end to end, using AI tools openly.
