When sub-agents are actually worth it: fan-out research and pre-planned parallel tasks
brandon_galang · x · 2026-10-09
A discussion on multi-agent workflow costs: models don't understand the cost of their delegates, and if your goal is efficiency, it's hard to beat a single agent's baseline performance while cutting cost.
brandongalang outlines the two cases where sub-agents actually pay off:
- Fanning out context gathering across channels (Notion, Slack, etc.) to smaller models in parallel—efficiency matters less, and parallelism brings latency benefits.
- Thoroughly pre-planned, fully independent tasks, letting the parent orchestrator retain the full plan in its own context window.
He concedes a single agent running sequentially may still be cheaper—the multi-agent setup just wins on cognitive manageability.
