Forced German reasoning helps RAG alignment but never beats native English
Oliver Hauck · hf · 2026-10-09
A new study tests reasoning-language alignment in monolingual RAG. Built on a German-language testbed over the tabletop RPG The Dark Eye, experiments show aligning reasoning language with the query and retrieved documents helps — forced German beats forced French even though the model scores higher in French, proving the gain comes from alignment, not proficiency. The advantage grows with richer, structure-aware context, but forced German only matches, never surpasses, the model's native unconstrained English reasoning, implying native multilingual reasoning is still needed. The testbed and QA benchmark are publicly released.
