StatCan overwrites old data, so this dev snapshots everything daily via keyless API
RichardsonDx · x · 2026-10-09
A developer noticed that Statistics Canada silently overwrites original values when it revises historical data, making it impossible to see what was published last month. In response, his CRED data project now snapshots every featured series daily, preserving the historical record.
The API requires no key — e.g. /api/observations?series=UNRATECA&from=2020-01-01 — so developers can pull data through a plain link. CRED charts also mark Canada's recessions as gray bands, letting you instantly tell whether a data spike occurred during a downturn.
