Lancet publishes first clinical trial of Google's AMIE chatbot in urgent care

Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center ran the first-of-its-kind clinical trial: nearly 100 patients discussed symptoms with Google's AMIE chatbot before seeing doctors, with summaries passed to physicians. Published in The Lancet.
- Over an 8-month trial, primary care physicians found the bot helpful in 75% of cases
- Doctors said it may have changed their approach in more than half of cases
- Physicians compared it to "a high-performing medical student or resident"
Eric Topol notes this is a warmup for a large randomized AI-vs-no-AI trial, and encouraging results came from the two-year-old Gemini 2.5 model. Covered by NYT's Cade Metz.
