UK PM moves to curb 18-month non-competes that tech startups say block AI hiring

UK Prime Minister Burnham announced plans to crack down on lengthy notice periods and non-compete clauses, some stretching to 18 months of gardening leave. Dozens of fast-growing startups including Synthesia and ElevenLabs had urged the government to act, calling labour immobility 'a classic collective action problem' that lowers wages and undermines innovation. Several ex-DeepMind staff have publicly complained about such clauses.
