Meta Paper: Category-Conditioned Retention Makes Agent Memory More Reliable
rohanpaul_ai · x · 2026-10-09
Meta's new paper "When to Remember, When to Abstain: Category-Conditioned Retention for Reliable Agent Memory" finds that a single confidence cutoff is suboptimal for agent memory.
- Most agent memory systems use one cutoff to decide which user facts to store
- The paper shows raising the cutoff only for value and belief claims works better
- Value/belief claims made up 21.5% of candidate memories but contributed more unsupported claims than all other categories combined
Key insight: what an agent chooses not to store matters as much as what it keeps.
