VC-backed AI acquisitions hit 195 deals in 2026, with OpenAI leading at 20 buys

Crunchbase data shows VC-backed AI companies made 195 acquisitions of AI startups through Sept 29 — 14% more than all of 2025 — while the number of acquirers grew just 2%, meaning the same players are buying faster. Only 12 of 195 deals disclosed prices.
- OpenAI is the most active buyer with 20 acquisitions over three years, 10 this year alone, spanning medical data, developer tools (Astral, Promptfoo, Gitpod/Ona), consulting/FDE services and computational photography (GlassImaging, $300M). Anthropic and legal-AI firm Legora each did 5; Harvey 4; Sierra and Cursor 3 each.
- Top disclosed deals: Nscale's $1.65B purchase of Anyscale, Cyera's $1B buy of Oasis Security, Anthropic's $400M acquisition of Coefficient Bio, and Sword Health's $285M purchase of Kaia Health.
- Legal tech is the hottest vertical: Harvey bought Hexus, Lume, Benchmark and Guardrails AI; Legora made five buys across legal research, regulatory intelligence and litigation analytics.
- Chinese activity is sparser publicly: Zhipu acquired 60% of AI compiler team Zhongke Jiahe, and Tencent reportedly led a $2B buyout of Manus from Meta (excluded from Crunchbase stats).
The analysis frames M&A as a standing strategy where deep-pocketed startups buy rather than build to seize time windows.
