Using Claude Code on NASA TESS data, researcher finds two Earth-sized exoplanet candidates
paraschopra · x · 2026-10-09
Inspired by a Reddit post on using Claude Code for planet discovery, Paras Chopra scanned five years of NASA TESS full-frame-image data on 526 nearby low-cadence stars and found two previously undocumented Earth-sized transiting planet candidates: TIC 370612437 (Cygnus, 158 ly, 0.02% dip every 3.56 days) and HIP 114417 (Andromeda, 134 ly, 0.03% every 4.93 days). Signals repeat 55 and 21 times across 2019-2024, survive holdout-year prediction tests, match NASA/MIT independent processing, and were reviewed by Codex and fresh Claude sessions. Caveats: a faint eclipsing binary could fake the dips; results are being reported to NASA ExoFOP, with TESS rescans due Aug 2027-Apr 2028. Nicknames: Aakanksha and Orbit.
