Apple paper: fancy SOTA agent harnesses offer no advantage over a minimal single-session coding agent
himanshustwts · x · 2026-10-09
An interesting new Apple paper argues that under an equal time budget and the same frontier LLM backbone, open-source SOTA agent harnesses provide NO advantage over a single-session coding agent with a minimal harness.
The finding challenges the prevailing assumption that more elaborate agent orchestration is inherently better—suggesting multi-step scaffolding gains may be offset by the time and complexity they consume, with direct implications for how coding agents are engineered.
