Google's A2A protocol moves to neutral foundation alongside MCP under AAIF

Google's agent-to-agent communication protocol A2A has moved from the Linux Foundation's umbrella into the Agentic AI Foundation (AAIF), putting both halves of the agent stack — tool access (MCP) and agent-to-agent communication (A2A) — under one neutral governance body.
AAIF grew from under 40 members at its December 2025 launch to over 250, with Google, Microsoft, Amazon, Anthropic, OpenAI, Bloomberg, Shopify, and Block backing it. For developers building agent workflows, the practical upside is less custom glue code between agents on different platforms, and freedom to swap providers by cost or performance without rebuilding the integration layer. The author notes these claims come from vendor framing in interviews, not independently verified outcomes.
