Mathematicians Urge Boycott of OpenAI After 700-File Math Release, Statement on Tao's Blog Says

After OpenAI released over 700 manuscript files on October 6 claiming solutions to high-profile math problems, the Association for Human Mathematics (AHM) published a scathing statement on Terence Tao's blog: "Releasing over 700 files at once is not a demonstration of scholarship, but a demonstration of power."
The statement notes OpenAI's claimed source of legitimacy — its advisory group on math and AI — had opened its initial position by saying frontier AI companies should not test advanced math problems on internal models. Ignoring that premise, AHM argues, shows total disregard for the norms of scientific research. The release comes as OpenAI defends lawsuits over plagiarism, copyright infringement, and trademark dilution.
AHM urges mathematicians to discontinue work with OpenAI and return to "a vision of science that centers human understanding," declaring that the backlash to AI is only just beginning.
