REA: open-source MCP lets coding agents reverse engineer binaries
techNmak · x · 2026-10-09
The open-source REA (Reverse Engineer Anything) project lets coding agents investigate apps without source code: it connects agents to Ghidra, Hopper and IDA via MCP, so they can inspect binaries, read decompiled functions, and trace calls. Examples: it traced how Notion handles clipboard ops through Electron IPC, and reconstructed a function from the 1996 game DX-Ball, verified against 3,205 original-x86 test cases. Still requires analysis and validation—not magic source recovery—but the field has moved from asking AI to write software to asking it to reverse engineer software.
