OpenAI revenue definition gap sparks AI hardware selloff as TSMC posts +55% YoY
tengyanAI · x · 2026-10-09
AI hardware stocks sold off: SOX fell 3.4%, with Micron and Oracle down 5%+. The trigger: FT reported OpenAI told investors its run-rate was $50B at end of September, not the $70B circulating.
The author notes most of the gap is definitional — Anthropic counts sales through cloud partners, OpenAI doesn't. But it still matters for Oracle, whose $664B backlog leans on a reported $300B OpenAI deal, raising real questions about OpenAI's ability to pay.
Meanwhile the physical side didn't blink: TSMC reported September sales +55% YoY, with Q3 (July–September) landing 2% above the top of its own guidance.
