Why mathematicians handle AI worse than developers: status-driven culture meets substitution fear
QuintinPope5 · x · 2026-10-09
Responding to the observation that mathematicians are coping with AI worse than software developers, Quintin Pope argues otherwise: mathematicians have always been the artists of STEM — driven more by status than pay, valuing peer feedback over market signals, with a small funding pie overall. They therefore (probably rightly) expect AI to substitute and commoditize their market position, making their resistance understandable.
