Tao-led mathematicians' association declares revolt against OpenAI over 700 AI-generated proofs

The Association for Human Mathematicians, led by Fields medalist Terence Tao, issued a statement urging mathematicians to cut ties with OpenAI after it released 700+ machine-generated proof drafts. OpenAI's models had attacked 8,000 open problems at 5% success, 3 hours of compute per solved problem, with no peer review. The group says this bypassed its own advisory panel's warnings and causes 'irreversible pollution' of research. Yann LeCun dissented, arguing automated formal proofs will shift math toward new concepts and conjectures.
