Model welfare debate: the case for near-zero-cost precautions over uncertainty
livgorton · x · 2026-10-09
In the ongoing model-welfare debate, developer Liv Gorton pushes back against the view that model welfare shouldn't be cared about at all, offering a symmetry argument: given meaningful uncertainty, extremely low-cost precautions (like banning abuse of Claude) have no downside even if AI welfare turns out to be meaningless.
She also disputes the framing that the world is worse off because people can't abuse Claude, rejecting the idea of a genuine tradeoff against human interests. The thread is set against Anthropic's recent Acceptable Use Policy change.
