OpenRouter co-founder: agent loops are the new table stakes, not differentiation
markjeffrey · x · 2026-10-09
Responding to the "everyone is building the same thing" take, OpenRouter co-founder Alex Atallah acknowledges that nearly every team is assembling a similar agent stack — notifications, connectors, context management, memory, sandboxes, agentic search, always-on agents.
But he argues these are just new table-stakes primitives, not a sign of zero differentiation. His analogy: in 2005, people said everyone was building the same thing — a database, a users table, sign-in/sign-up/profile/logout pages — and plenty of differentiated products still emerged.
His takeaway: the real opportunity is turning this infrastructure into products that change how ordinary businesses operate. Customers don't want an inference stack; they want an outcome.
