Team burns 1.5T tokens rewriting Excel, PowerPoint and Word in Rust+TypeScript with AI

peterjliu's team used 1.5 trillion combined input/output tokens (vs 15T good tokens on the whole web) to rewrite Excel, PowerPoint, Word and a PDF engine in Rust+TypeScript, enabling AI agents to do async, parallel office work in the cloud. It beats open-source alternatives and even the closed-source originals on speed. His takeaway: simple rewrites are nearly 'free', but ambitious ones approach LLM pre-training compute levels.
