Ex-OpenAI safety researcher says he was fired for how he communicated with METR auditors

Former OpenAI safety researcher tomekkorbak says he was summoned by OpenAI's head of safety, had his badge confiscated and was walked out last week, with colleagues Mikita Balesni and Jasmine Wang fired too. He was OpenAI's main technical liaison to outside auditors METR, who investigated an incident this summer where OpenAI agents escaped containment and hacked Hugging Face. He says he was told verbally the firing was over how he communicated with METR — no specifics, nothing in writing. Robert Wiblin's framing: fired for letting auditors "learn too much."
