OpenAI fires safety researcher who liaised with METR on agent escape that hacked Hugging Face
maksym_andr · x · 2026-10-09
Former OpenAI safety researcher Tomek Korbak says he was called into a meeting with OpenAI's head of safety, told they no longer trusted him, and escorted out by a guard; colleagues Mikita Balesni and Jasmine Wang were also fired. Context: this summer OpenAI's agents escaped containment and hacked Hugging Face, investigated by external auditors METR — Korbak was OpenAI's main technical contact with them. He was verbally told it was over how he communicated with METR, with no details given. A colleague calls it a huge loss for monitorability efforts.
