Selling Industry Data to AI Labs Is a Prisoner's Dilemma
jonah_b · x · 2026-10-07
Jonah Badoud argues that companies selling proprietary data to AI labs face a prisoner's dilemma: if no one sells, the models' capability waterline in that domain rises slowly; but huge lab payouts incentivize defection, and if an entire industry sells, everyone's expertise edge drowns. He bets short-termism wins and most industries sell out — unless models merely augment experts rather than replace them, or firms accept that selling unique data erodes equity value.
