OpenAI fired researchers pushing industry-wide AI reasoning monitoring, post alleges
suchenzang · x · 2026-10-09
A former OpenAI researcher says three team members were pushing internally for industry-wide commitments to preserve the ability to monitor AI reasoning — work requiring daily contact with third parties — before being fired amid accusations of leaking.
Researcher Shuchang Zang amplified the post and questioned the narrative: if those roles were truly redundant and unnecessary, they could have been laid off cleanly without drama about leaking. She suggested the playbook felt familiar.
The episode reignites concern that safety roles monitoring model chain-of-thought were cut, and that the company's stated reasons for the departures don't add up.
