Don't crown Anthropic yet: six months ago it throttled hard, and the pendulum will swing back
ryunuck · x · 2026-10-09
Responding to the narrative that Anthropic has overtaken OpenAI, the author recalls that just six months ago Anthropic's throttling was severe: for a whole month every prompt took over a minute before the first token, medium reasoning was limited 20x, and the company tried to remove headless -p mode from subscribers while wrapping the announcement in PR.
The author argues no professional should run on an Anthropic subscription today — an opaque dependency means your productivity can randomly tank and it takes weeks to realize you're being served a quantized model. Anthropic will overload again.
The quoted post notes competition benefits users, suspects DeepSeek v4.n Flash and other open-weight models deserve more credit for cheaper frontier capability, and warns against a monopoly or entrenched oligopoly.
