She Designed Meta's New AI Assistant Muse Logo — Then the Design World Turned on Her

WIRED reports that Bay Area lettering artist Jessica Hische was hired to design the M icon and logotype for Meta's newly launched AI personal assistant Muse — and promptly faced a wave of backlash from fellow designers on Threads accusing her of selling out.
Hische explained the financial reality behind the decision: as a small business owner she often had only 2-4 payrolls in the bank, had invested $100,000 in Studioworks (an admin platform for creatives) and $30,000 in Drawling (her Oakland kids' art shop), and supports 4 people on payroll including her mother. Critics were unmoved: "It's not about money, it's about ethics," with one comparing the job to "doing a hit for the mob."
The story highlights the ethical rift AI has opened in the creative industry, where even freelance commercial work for a Meta AI project draws intense community condemnation.
