David Manheim: open models shift AI power not to users but to NVIDIA
davidmanheim · x · 2026-10-09
AI safety researcher David Manheim is skeptical of the popular claim that open models will transfer control of powerful AI from AI companies to users, the way open source software did. Since very few people will run or rent GPU clusters to serve models themselves, he argues most of the power shift will be from AI companies to NVIDIA — the compute provider — rather than to end users.
