Mathematician reviews OpenAI's papers: ingenious trick in matmul paper, Sidorenko proof uncertain
ChrSzegedy · x · 2026-10-09
Researcher ChrSzegedy shares his brother, mathematician Balazs Szegedy's take on OpenAI's latest math papers: in the matrix multiplication paper Balazs — who worked on this 20 years ago — spotted an ingenious-looking computational trick and is still reviewing it. On Sidorenko's conjecture, whose strongest special version he proved 10 years ago, he remains skeptical of the general statement: a month ago he pushed with Google's Astra to find counterexamples but his graphs were too small, and the new proof is very complicated — he's unsure it's correct but hopes it holds. Overall he was very excited.
