OpenAI nears $50B annualized revenue, ~$20B short — but the cut matters more than the headline

OpenAI reportedly approached $50B in annualized revenue at the end of September, roughly $20B below expectations. The real question, argues Shay, isn't $50B vs $70B but how much of each AI dollar OpenAI keeps after Microsoft, Amazon and Google take their cut. For the AI buildout almost nothing changes: GPUs, memory, networking and power can shift across Anthropic, Meta, Google and enterprises, so aggregate token growth matters far more than one lab's revenue number.
