Foresight Institute Turns 40: Drexler and Peterson's Early Bet on Transformative Tech
allisondman · x · 2026-10-09
Foresight Institute was incorporated on October 8, 1986, in Washington, DC — 40 years ago. Co-founders Christine Peterson and Eric Drexler set out to take seriously technologies that could greatly enhance the human condition and back people whose work was too ambitious or interdisciplinary for legacy institutions. In a tribute, Allison Duman credits the institute with unusually early and prescient support across molecular nanotechnology, longevity, sovereign AI, and neurotechnology — the reason she moved to the Bay Area a decade ago.
