Jon Barron argued that Heeger and Bergen's classic texture synthesis algorithm is astonishingly similar to a non-parametric diffusion algorithm in a conv net — histogram matching acts as 'diffusion' and wavelets as the 'conv net.' Lucas Beyer replied he's now catching up on the pre-2012 work.
