Cognitive scientist Kelsey Allen: human mental simulation exposes the physical reasoning limits of current AI
VectorInst · x · 2026-10-08
At Vector Institute's 2026 AI Summit, faculty member Kelsey Allen broke down how human cognition exposes the limits of state-of-the-art AI systems and how to fix them.
She notes modern models excel at knowledge representation but struggle with physical reasoning: the Virtual Tools game shows humans solve novel physical problems in just a few attempts via highly accurate mental simulation, a capability current LLMs and generative models lack.
