Ecosia dumps Mistral for Chinese open-source models, CEO says quality is a year behind

Ecosia, the Berlin search engine used by Germany's environment ministry and the UK's NHS, is dropping Mistral for open-source models including ones from China. CEO Christian Kroll said they are "disappointed with the quality of Mistral," calling its models "a year behind." Ecosia switched from OpenAI to Mistral in May but hit recurring issues like overloaded servers — "we were simply too large a customer." Kroll also questioned whether Mistral's reliance on international investors counts as true European sovereignty, and raised doubts over its fit with climate goals given France's nuclear-heavy energy mix. Mistral chief scientist Guillaume Lample responded at a press conference.
