OpenAI Publishes AI Solutions to 370+ Unsolved Math Problems, Dividing Mathematicians
jeremyakahn · x · 2026-10-08
OpenAI on Tuesday published AI-generated full or partial solutions to more than 370 outstanding mathematical problems, including some long regarded as grand challenges in the field.
The sheer volume stunned many mathematicians, but the way OpenAI tackled and published the results split the community: prominent figures like UCLA's Terence Tao have criticized AI companies for targeting long-standing math problems to test models and score marketing points, while others welcomed the results as opening huge new areas of exploration. Most agree on one thing: math will never be the same.
