DeepMind research director calls out NVIDIA, Meta, Google, Anthropic over AI education funding
NandoDF · x · 2026-10-08
Nando de Freitas, research director at DeepMind, publicly called on NVIDIA, Meta, Google, Anthropic, OpenAI, AWS and Tesla to respond to funding requests for AI education and research in underserved regions.
- He says it is 'shameful' that in an era full of AI billionaires, it's harder than 10 years ago to raise funds for Deep Learning Indaba (Africa) and Khipu (Latin America).
- He thanked DiscoLoopAI for supporting Khipu, noting a startup is no excuse, and urged Anthropic and OpenAI employees to push their companies to help.
A rare public rebuke of frontier labs' neglect of Global South AI research.
