UPenn's ModQuad: quadrotors that dock mid-flight and self-assemble into flying structures
lukas_m_ziegler · x · 2026-10-08
Researchers at the University of Pennsylvania introduced ModQuad, a modular aerial robot system where individual quadrotors dock with each other while flying and then operate as a single cooperative structure.
- Each unit is a quadrotor enclosed in a cuboid frame whose flat faces can align and attach to other modules;
- Multiple robots self-assemble into larger flying structures using their own bodies as building blocks;
- Once connected, the assembled structure flies cooperatively, sharing control and stability across modules.
